A ball valve is a type of valve used to control the flow of a liquid or gas through a pipe. It gets its name from the hollow, perforated ball inside the valve that pivots to control the flow through it. The valve is operated by turning a handle or lever attached to the stem, which rotates the ball inside the valve. When the handle is perpendicular to the pipe, the valve is closed; when parallel, it's open.
